Identity Change Process - Chapter 1.7
Super Vitality Book

Identity Identification Process

List at least 10 examples for each of the following types of words. They should be words which will inspire you and drive you to succeed in your weight/fitness/health goals. I’ve listed a couple of examples to get you started.

Adjectives: Successful, Confident, Inventive, Adventurous, Disciplined, Flexible...

Noun: Athlete, Coach, Mother, Father, Entrepreneur, Leader...

Verb: Studies, Exercises, Trains, Motivates, Inspires...

Now that you’ve got the various words, I want you to put a sentence together with three of your favourite and most inspiring words from each column.

 For example:

“I, Joe Bloggs, am a successful, confident, inventive, disciplined, decisive and flexible; coach, athlete and dad that loves to exercise, trains effortlessly and studies health continuously.”

Play around with it and have fun replacing the words in italics with other ones which work for you and leaving the ones in bold and italics there to give the sentence structure. This is now your ‘Morning Power Statement’.

Every morning when you first wake up, have a written copy of your Morning Power Statement somewhere close to your mirror. Look yourself in the eyes and say it with conviction and emotion. This is not an affirmation as I don’t want you merely repeating this with no passion. It’s more of an incantation (like a magical spell or charm). One of the best ways to get emotion into something (if you find it challenging) is with motion. Move about a bit as you say it to yourself. I know it feels silly, but remember what I said about having an open mind and going for something new and different. Well, this is your chance.

If what you’ve been trying up to now hasn’t worked for you, then you should do something – anything else, remember? I’ve heard it said many times (as I’m sure you have too) that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results (that was Einstein too). Well, now it’s time to do something different. I also recommend doing this first thing in the morning, in the first 20 minutes after waking. During this period after waking, your mind is more receptive to information than at other times during the day, so take advantage of that.

Do this for just 30 days and notice what changes happen in your life. If you start to change your identity about health, or exercise, or your weight or anything like that, then everything around you will change. As you start to think of yourself as someone who is x, y, z (whatever that might be) you will start to behave like that.

When you’re offered that second helping of dessert your unconscious will kick in and you’ll be asking yourself “Is this something an x, y, z person would eat/drink/do?”

As you have this identity more and more ingrained into you, you’ll start to notice these changes. First you must think and then you will be. Learn to act ‘as if’. By that I mean, learn to act as if something is already true, even if it’s not.
